The biggest concern Canadian Buyers have is dealing with the importing. I know exactly how you feel because I personally went through this whole process ... and it was a NIGHTMARE!
I personally crossed into Canada at the Peace Arch crossing.
This was mistake #1 ... after sitting in line for over an hour we were told that this particular crossing doesn't handle importing a car into Canada so we had to go to the Pacific Highway Crossing ... sit for ANOTHER hour and finally get started!
We didn’t realize at the time that BEFORE you even import your car to canada the US requires you to EXPORT your car.
They require that you leave you car at the border for 72 hours (3 business days) so they can ensure you are not exporting a "salvage" or "stolen" car.
Through some small miracle and extremely rare exception we were able to avoid having to walk home and the customs agent gave us clearance (after 3 hours of haggling and stress!).
Next came Importing the Car at the Canadian side of the border. The customs agent gave us the forms to fill out and charged us the Importation Fee (no problem), Taxes (we had expected these), and a "Duties Tax" of over $2,000 (for cars made outside of North America which our car wasn’t! but we didn’t know this!).
An extra $2,000 puts a HUGE hole in your bank account especially if you didn’t see it coming!
What’s even worse is finding out you didn’t even have to pay it in the first place!! Our car, at this point, is still not imported!
We needed to have our car pass a Federal Inspection. It cost me an additional $1,557 to get the car to pass the inspection.
Besides just the financial costs it took well over 50+ hours just to get it all done most of the time taken to make multiple trips back to the US for paperwork and repairs.
